What the job involves
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Employment Solicitor to join Westminster City Council's Employment, Criminal and Commercial Litigation (ECCL) Team. You will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality legal services across a diverse and complex employment law portfolio, providing expert advice and representation on matters that can be high profile, politically sensitive, and financially significant. Working closely with senior officers, elected members, and departmental clients, you will help shape key employment decisions and contribute to the efficient delivery of council services.
Key Responsibilities include providing timely, practical and commercially focused legal advice on a wide range of employment law matters. Managing a varied caseload of employment-related litigation, including complex, high-profile, and sensitive matters. Advising on issues including unfair dismissal, TUPE, discrimination claims, Equality Act matters, whistleblowing claims, and settlement agreements. Conducting proceedings and representing the Council in Employment Tribunals, courts, inquiries, and other hearings as appropriate. Drafting pleadings, witness statements, legal documentation, reports, and legal opinions. Instructing and managing counsel and external legal advisers where required. Providing legal and procedural advice to Cabinet Members, committees, sub-committees, and senior officers. Monitoring developments in employment law and communicating legal changes to client departments. Maintaining accurate case management records and ensuring compliance with Lexcel and professional standards. Supporting continuous improvement initiatives and contributing to the development of teams, systems, and processes.
Skills
- Experience advising on employment law matters
- Strong working knowledge of local authority employment law responsibilities
- Excellent drafting, advocacy, and negotiation skills
- Ability to manage complex caseloads with minimal supervision
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Competence working within a digital and virtual environment
- Qualified Solicitor/Barrister in England and Wales or Fellow of CILEx
